She attended a school run by the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, where she excelled in her studies and obtained a teaching certificate. After her parents died in 1870, she applied to join the Daughters of the Sacred Heart, but was rejected because of her poor health. She then became the headmistress of an orphanage in Codogno, where she gathered a group of women who shared her religious aspirations.
 
In 1880, she founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (MSC), a religious congregation dedicated to serving the needy and spreading the Gospel. She wrote the rule and constitutions of the institute, and became its superior general. She also adopted the name Frances Xavier, in honor of her patron saint.
 
She had hoped to go to China as a missionary, but God had other plans for her. In 1887, she met Pope Leo XIII, who asked her to go to America instead, to help the Italian immigrants who were flocking there in search of a better life. He told her: “Not to the East, but to the West.”
 
She obeyed his request and sailed to New York in 1889 with six other sisters. There she encountered many difficulties and challenges: poverty, discrimination, language barriers, lack of resources, and hostility from some clergy and bishops. But she did not give up. She trusted in God’s providence and relied on her prayer and perseverance.
 
She opened her first school and orphanage in New York, followed by many others across the country. She also established hospitals, convents, nurseries, and homes for the elderly and the homeless. She traveled extensively throughout America and beyond, visiting her foundations and looking for new opportunities to serve. She visited 14 countries and made 23 transatlantic crossings in her lifetime.
 
She was a woman of vision and action, who adapted to different cultures and situations. She was also a woman of compassion and love, who cared for each person as a child of God. She had a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which inspired her to spread his love to everyone she met.
