Biography St. John XXIII

St. John XXIII, born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, was the Pope of the Catholic Church from 1958 until his death in 1963. He was born in Sotto il Monte, Italy in 1881, and from a young age, he felt called to the priesthood. He was ordained a priest in 1904 and served in various roles within the Catholic Church, including as a bishop and an apostolic nuncio.

In 1958, at the age of 76, he was elected Pope, surprising many as he was considered a “transitional” Pope, not expected to hold the office for a long period of time. However, his papacy proved to be one of the most significant in recent history, as he embarked on a program of reform and modernization within the Church.

One of his most notable achievements was the convocation of the Second Vatican Council in 1962, which brought together bishops from all over the world to discuss and modernize Church teachings and practices. The Council was the first of its kind in nearly a century and it led to a number of significant changes within the Church, including a renewed emphasis on the liturgy and the use of vernacular languages, as well as a renewed emphasis on social justice and ecumenism.

He also took an active role in promoting peace, particularly during the Cold War. He actively sought to improve relations between the Catholic Church and other Christian denominations and religions, and he worked to promote peace and reconciliation between the world’s major powers.

John XXIII is also remembered for his warmth and personal touch. He was known for his simple and unassuming nature and his approachable personality, which endeared him to people from all walks of life. He once famously said, “I am only the Servant of the servants of God.”

On June 3, 1963, Pope John XXIII announced that he had gastric cancer and would undergo surgery. Unfortunately the surgery was unsuccessful and his health declined rapidly. He died on June 3, 1963 and he was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2000 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2014.

His papacy was not as long as some others, but his impact on the Catholic Church and the world was truly significant. His example of humility, compassion and commitment to dialogue and peace continue to inspire people today.
