St. Junipero Serra Biography

St. Junipero Serra was a Spanish Franciscan friar who is credited with the founding of nine of the 21 Spanish missions in California. He was born on November 24, 1713 in Petra, Mallorca, Spain, and was named Miquel Josep Serra i Ferrer at birth. Serra was the third of thirteen children born to Antonio Nadal Serra and Margarita Rosa Ferrer.

Serra received his early education in a Franciscan school in Petra, and then went on to study theology and philosophy at the University of Lleida. He was ordained a priest in 1737, and then entered the Franciscan order, taking the name Junipero.

In 1749, Serra was sent to the New World as a missionary to the indigenous people of Mexico. He spent the next thirty years working among the indigenous people of Mexico, establishing missions and working to convert them to Christianity.

In 1769, Serra was appointed by the Spanish king to lead an expedition to establish missions in Alta California, which was then a Spanish territory. He arrived in San Diego in July of that year and founded the first mission, San Diego de Alcalá, which became the base for the mission system in California.

Over the next twenty years, Serra founded eight more missions in California, including San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, San Antonio de Padua, San Gabriel Arcángel, San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, San Francisco de Asís, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Clara de Asís, and San Buenaventura. These missions were established to convert the indigenous people to Christianity, and to serve as a base for Spanish colonization of the region.

Serra was a controversial figure in his time, as he and the other friars used the mission system to exert control over the indigenous people and to assert Spanish dominance over the region. However, he is also credited with bringing Christianity to the region, and with establishing the foundations of modern California.

Serra died on August 28, 1784, at the Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, and was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1988. He was canonized as a saint by Pope Francis in 2015, making him the first saint to be canonized in the United States.
