St. Peter Canisius was born in Holland on May 8, 1521. He was one of the first companions of St. Ignatius, and became a great theologian and preacher. He played a prominent part in combating Protestantism in Germany and at the Council of Trent. He died at Fribourg, Switzerland on December 21, 1597. He was canonized by Pope Pius XI on May 21, 1925, who at the same time declared him a Doctor of the Universal Church.

St. Peter Canisius was a Jesuit priest, theologian, and educator of the 16th century, known for his contributions to the Catholic Reformation and his work as a missionary.
