    Our Lady of Lourdes

    It was on February 11, 1858, that the first of the eighteen apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous took place at Lourdes, a small town in the South of France, situated amidst the Pyrenees mountains on the banks of the river Gave.

    It was here that the apparitions of Our Lady occurred. The Beautiful Lady was dressed in white with a light blue girdle; a white veil covered her head and fell over her shoulders to the ground; her feet seemed to rest on the rose-tree in the Grotto, and their only covering was two large golden roses. Her hands were joined before her breast, and on her right arm hung a Rosary-the beads of which seemed like drops of milk, whilst the chain and cross shone like gold.

    She carried the Rosary in all the eighteen apparitions. In the earlier ones she was seen to pass the beads one by one through her fingers, as though designating the means by which she would have praise and petition offered to God. On March 25th, the Feast of the Annunciation, when Bernadette asked the Beautiful Lady her name, she replied: “I am the Immaculate Conception”, and vanished.

    An imposing grand Basilica, known as the Church of the Rosary, now stands on top of the rock above the Grotto where the apparitions took place. It replaced the one erected in 1871. Countless spiritual and bodily miracles have occurred at this wonderful Grotto. Our Lady of Lourdes’ intercession is sought by the sick and infirm throughout the world.
