    St. Leo The Great

    This St. Leo the Great medal honors one of the Church’s great Popes. Only three popes have been popularly acclaimed as “Great,” and Saint Leo was the first of the three. He became pope in 440, in the declining days of the Roman Empire of the West. The emperor no longer lived at Rome but at Ravenna, so Leo became the protector of the city. When Attila approached with his Huns, Leo went out to meet him and persuaded him to spare the city. Three years later when the Vandal king Genseric sacked the city, Saint Leo persuaded him to spare the people of Rome and to spare certain churches.

    Worse than the physical dangers to the city of Rome were the spiritual dangers to the Church that came from the vertical reach wings of Nestorius and Eutyches. Leo successfully combated these heresies. This pontiff left 173 letters and 96 sermons, but they tell us little about himself.
