    St. Matthias the Apostle

    St. Clement of Alexandria assures us that St. Matthias was one of the seventy-two disciples of Jesus. This is also confirmed by Eusebius and St. Jerome. From the Acts of the Apostles we learn that St. Matthias was a constant follower of the Savior from the time of His baptism by St. John the Baptist until the Ascension of Christ.

    Soon after the Ascension, St. Peter convened an assembly of the faithful declared the necessity of choosing an Apostle to succeed Judas Iscariot. The two chosen as most worthy of the dignity were Joseph called Barsabas, surnamed the Just because of his extraordinary piety, and Matthias. After praying to God to show which of the two He had chosen, they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Matthias. He was immediately associated with the Eleven, and ranked among the Apostles. (Acts 1:21-26).
