Biography of St. Colette

St. Colette, also known as Colette of Corbie, was a French nun and mystic who lived in the 14th and 15th centuries. She was born in the village of Corbie, in the Picardy region of France, in the 1381 or 1382. She came from a poor family, but from a young age she felt a call to religious life.

At the age of 18, Colette entered the Poor Clare monastery in Corbie, where she remained for the rest of her life. Despite her young age, she quickly rose to a position of leadership within the community, known for her holiness, wisdom, and devotion to God.

Colette had a deep sense of humility and a deep love for God, she lived a austere life. She fasted frequently, prayed for long hours and inflicted harsh penances on herself, she also had deep compassion for the poor, and would often share her food with them.

Colette had a strong desire to be of service to others, and this led her to found a new order of nuns, the Colettine Poor Clares, which was approved by Pope Martin V in 1410. This order followed a particularly strict rule, which included complete poverty, silence and seclusion from the world, and a complete focus on the contemplation of God. The Order quickly spread throughout Europe and was known for its holiness and devotion.

Colette’s writings also reflect her deep spiritual devotion, she left behind some spiritual letters, writings on the Rule and Constitution of her order and a book on the life of St. Clare of Assisi. These writings provide valuable insights into her spiritual life and her devotion to God.

Colette is known for her strong devotion to the Eucharist, and the devotion to St. Francis of Assisi, she also is said to have had visions and ecstasies, and was considered a mystic by her contemporaries.

Colette’s devotion to God and her leadership of her order attracted many followers, and her reputation for holiness spread throughout Europe. She became known as “the second St. Clare” and she was canonized by Pope Pius IX in 1807.

Colette died on March 6, 1447, at the age of 65, she was buried in the monastery at Corbie. Her tomb became a site of pilgrimage and her cult continued to spread. She was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1949 as one of the saints of the Catholic Church.
