St. Juliana Biography

St. Juliana of Liège was a 13th century Belgian religious figure and mystic. She was born in 1193 in Liège, which is in modern-day Belgium. Not much is known about her early life, but she is believed to have been raised in a devout Christian family.

As a young woman, Juliana became a nun and entered the Augustinian monastery of Mont-Cornillon, which was located near Liège. While there, she began to experience visions and revelations. One of her most notable visions was of a full moon with a dark spot on it, which she interpreted as a missing feast day in honor of the Blessed Sacrament. This vision is believed to have been the inspiration for her campaign to establish the Feast of Corpus Christi, which is a Catholic feast day that celebrates the body and blood of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.

Juliana began to promote the idea of the new feast day to the bishop of Liège and other religious leaders, but her efforts were met with resistance. However, she persisted and eventually her vision and campaign caught the attention of the papacy. In 1246, Pope Innocent IV issued a papal bull establishing the feast of Corpus Christi as a universal feast of the Catholic Church, to be celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday.

After the establishment of the feast, Juliana’s fame spread and she became known as a spiritual leader and mystic. She continued to have visions and revelations, and many people came to her seeking spiritual guidance. She also became known for her charity and works of mercy.

Juliana is said to have suffered from a severe illness for the final years of her life, her fellow sisters and a few priests were the only ones who knew of her ailment. Nevertheless, she continued to provide spiritual guidance and support to those who came to her.

Juliana died in 1258, and her cult began to grow soon after her death. She was beatified in 1869, and in 1873 she was canonized as a saint by Pope Pius IX. Saint Juliana Feast day is celebrated on May 13th.

Her relics are venerated at Mont-Cornillon which is now known as ‘Saint-Juliana-Forthumbry’ in Belgium. Many miracles have been attributed to her intercession, including healings and other miraculous events.

St. Juliana is remembered today as a dedicated religious leader and mystic who worked tirelessly to promote devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, as well as a kind and compassionate person who helped others in need.
