St. Lawrence Biography

St. Lawrence, also known as Lawrence of Rome, (died 258 AD) was a Christian martyr and deacon who is venerated as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, and Anglican Communion. His feast day is celebrated on August 10th.

St. Lawrence was born in Huesca, Spain, and he was a deacon in the church of Rome. He was in charge of administering the goods and distributions of the Church, and he was also known for his tireless work in helping the poor and the needy.

After his death, Lawrence became a popular figure and his cult spread rapidly in Rome and throughout the Christian world. He was buried on a cemetery on the Via Tiburtina, near the spot where he had been martyred.

His relics were later transferred to the Church of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura in Rome, which was built in his honor, and it became one of the seven principal churches of Rome and an important place of pilgrimage. His skull is also said to be preserved at the Basilica of San Lorenzo

The Life of St. Lawrence

St. Lawrence was the first of the seven Deacons of the Roman Church. Saint Lawrence assisted the Pope when celebrating Mass, distributed the Holy Eucharist to the faithful, ad ministered the Church’s possessions, and dispensed the revenues among the poor. St. Lawrence was one of the victims of the persecution of the Emperor Valerian in 258, like Pope Sixtus II and many other members of the Roman clergy.

In August, 258, the Emperor issued an edict commanding that all Bishops, Priests and Deacons should be put to death immediately. This command was promptly carried out. Pope Sixtus II was arrested in one of the catacombs and executed at once. Two other Deacons, Felicissimus and Agapitus, were put to death the same day. Four days later, on Au gust 10th, St. Lawrence also suffered a martyr’s death. He was laid on an iron bed in the shape of a gridiron, under which were placed half-lighted coals, so as to pro long his tortures and make his death more painful. Pope Damasus built a basilica in Rome, which he dedicated to St. Lawrence. It is now known as that of San Lorenzo in Damaso.

St. Lawrence and Spain

St. Lawrence was born in Hispania (modern Spain), and that he met Pope Sixtus II in Zaragoza, where they both studied. Hispania was a province of the Roman Empire that had a strong Christian presence since the first century.
