St. Raphael the Archangel in the Old Testament Book of Tobit

St. Raphael the Archangel ArtworkThe book of Tobit is one of the most fascinating and inspiring stories in the Bible. It tells the story of two Israelite families, that of the blind Tobit in Nineveh and of the abandoned Sarah in Ecbatana, who are living as exiles from Israel after the Assyrian conquest. Through a series of events, God tests their faith, responds to their prayers, and protects them from harm. The main character of the story is not Tobit or his son Tobias, but the angel Raphael, who disguises himself as a human and guides Tobias on his journey to retrieve his father’s money and to marry Sarah.

Raphael’s role in the story is crucial. He is the one who reveals God’s plan to Tobit and Tobias, and who helps them overcome the obstacles they face. He is also the one who teaches them important lessons about prayer, charity, obedience, and trust in God. Raphael is not only an angel, but a friend, a companion, and a teacher.

Raphael’s Journey with Tobias

Raphael first appears in Tobit 5:4-5, when Tobit sends his son, Tobias, to Rages, a town in Media, to collect ten silver talents that he had left with his relative Gabael. Tobit instructs Tobias to find a trustworthy guide for his journey. Tobias goes out to look for one, and meets Raphael at the gate of Nineveh. Raphael introduces himself as Azariah, a fellow Israelite and a relative of Tobit. He offers to accompany Tobias to Rages and back. Tobias agrees and brings him to his father.

Tobit is happy to see Raphael and welcomes him into his house. He asks him about his family and his tribe. Raphael answers truthfully, but conceals his true identity as an angel. He tells Tobit that he knows Gabael well and that he can safely bring Tobias to him. Tobit trusts Raphael and entrusts his son to him. He also gives him four drachmas as wages and a written note for Gabael.

Raphael then sets out with Tobias on their journey. Along the way, he protects Tobias from danger and provides him with useful advice. He also reveals to him God’s will for his life.

Along their journey the two stop by the Tigris River and Tobias catches a large fish that tries to swallow his foot. Raphael tells him to catch the fish and to keep its heart, liver, and gallbladder. He later explains that the heart and liver can be used to drive away demons, and that the gallbladder can be used to cure blindness.

Raphael Casts Out the Demon in Sarah

When Tobias and Raphael arrive in Ecbatana, they meet Sarah and her father Raguel. Sarah is a beautiful and virtuous woman, but she has been tormented by a demon named Asmodeus, who kills every man who marries her on their wedding night. She has already lost seven husbands in this way, and she is despised by her maidservants and her neighbors. She prays to God to end her misery or to take her life.

Raphael tells Tobias that Sarah is his destined wife, and that he can marry her without fear of the demon. He instructs him how to do so: by praying with her on their wedding night, by burning the heart and liver of the fish on incense, and by abstaining from sexual intercourse for three nights. He assures him that God will bless their marriage with love, happiness, and children.

Tobias follows Raphael’s instructions and marries Sarah. The demon flees from them and is bound by Raphael in the desert of Upper Egypt. Raguel rejoices at their marriage and gives them half of his possessions as dowry. He also writes a deed that grants them the other half after his death.

Raphael Heals Tobit’s Sight

Raphael urges Tobias to return to his father, Tobit, as soon as possible, before he dies of grief. He also tells him to take with him the gallbladder of the fish to heal his father’s blindness. They depart from Ecbatana with Sarah and a large caravan of servants, animals, and goods.

On their way back to Nineveh, they collect the money from Gabael. They then continue their journey until they reach Tobit’s house. There, Tobias applies the gallbladder of the fish to his father’s eyes and restores his sight. Tobit is overjoyed to see his son again and to meet his daughter-in-law Sarah. He praises God for his mercy and kindness.

Raphael Reveals His Identity as an Angel

Finally, Raphael reveals his true identity as an angel of God who was sent to help them in their troubles. He tells them that he was not really Azariah, but “the angel Raphael, one of the seven, who stand before the Lord” Tobit 12:15.

Revealing that he was the Archangel Raphael and that he had offered all the good works of the elder Tobias to the Lord, he admonished, not only a virtuous father and son, but all mankind, that: “Prayer is good with fasting and alms: more than to lay up treasures of gold.”

St. Raphael in the New Testament

In the New Testament, Raphael is not mentioned by name, but his actions and presence may be inferred in different passages. In the Gospel of John, chapter 5, we read about a miraculous healing that Jesus performed at the pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem. There was a man who had been an invalid for 38 years, waiting for someone to help him get into the pool when the water was stirred. He believed that the first one to enter the pool after the stirring would be healed of whatever disease he had.

The text tells us that it was an angel of the Lord who came down at certain seasons and moved the water. Many scholars have identified this angel as Raphael. Raphael means “God heals” in Hebrew, and he is often associated with healing and protection.

Why did Raphael stir the water? Some commentators suggest that he was following God’s command to test the faith and patience of the sick people who gathered there. Others say that he was showing God’s mercy and grace by providing a means of healing for those who could not afford or access other remedies. Still others argue that he was preparing the way for Jesus, who would reveal himself as the true source of healing and salvation.

Whatever his motive, Raphael’s role in this story is significant. He demonstrates God’s power and presence in a place of suffering and despair. He also contrasts with Jesus, who does not need to wait for a stirring of the water to heal the man. Jesus simply speaks to him and tells him to get up, take his mat and walk. Jesus shows that he has authority over nature, disease and sin. He also shows compassion and care for the man, who had been neglected and ignored by others.

Raphael and Jesus are both agents of God’s healing, but they operate in different ways. Raphael stirs the water from above, while Jesus touches the man from below. Raphael heals only one person at a time, while Jesus heals many people at once. Raphael requires faith and action from the sick person, while Jesus gives grace and forgiveness freely. Raphael points to God’s sovereignty and justice, while Jesus reveals God’s love and mercy.

St. Raphael Iconography

Raphael is also depicted in Christian art as a young man dressed in ceremonial robes, holding a staff and an orb, this attribute stems from his role in Tobit’s story as a guide and companion of Tobit’s son, Tobias. St. Raphael is also sometime sometimes depicted either carrying or standing on a fish, which refers to his healing of Tobit’s blindness with the fish’s gall in the Book of Tobit.

St. Raphael is the Patron Saint of the Sick

While the Catholic Church does not officially recognize one saint as the patron saint of the sick, St. Raphael the Archangel is often invoked as the patron saint of the sick.

St. Raphael is often invoked as the patron saint of the sick because of his role in the Book of Tobit in the Old Testament. In the story, Tobit becomes blind and is advised by his son Tobias to seek the help of a kinsman named Azariah, who is actually St. Raphael in disguise.

St. Raphael guides Tobias on a journey to collect a debt owed to Tobit, and along the way, they encounter a demon that had been tormenting a young woman named Sarah. St. Raphael instructs Tobias to catch a fish and use its organs to drive the demon away, which is successful.

Later, St. Raphael helps heal Tobit’s blindness and reveals his true identity as an angel sent by God to help them. As a result of this story, St. Raphael has been associated with healing and has become a patron saint of the sick.

St. Raphael is also mentioned in the New Testament book of Tobit, where he is described as “one of the seven holy angels” who “enter and serve before the glory of the Holy One” (Tobit 12:15). This description of St. Raphael as a holy angel further emphasizes his association with healing and divine intervention.

As a result, St. Raphael has become a popular saint to invoke for healing, particularly in the Catholic and Orthodox traditions. Saint Peregrine is also often invoked as the patron saint of those suffering from cancer and other serious illnesses.
