Ursula Giuliani was born at Mercatello in the Duchy of Urbino, Italy. She showed marvelous signs of sanctity from the beginning. As a result of a vision of our Lady, she made a vow to become a nun. When her father opposed this she fell ill and only became well when he gave his consent. She entered the Capuchin Poor Clares in 1667, taking the name Veronica in honor of the Passion, to which she had great devotion.

After her profession her absorption in the Passion deepened. She had a vision of our Lord bearing his cross, and she began to have acute pain over her heart. In 1693 she had another vision in which the chalice of Christ’s sufferings was offered to her. She accepted it after a great struggle with herself. After that something of the sufferings of Christ were reproduced in her body and soul. The imprint of the crown of thorns appeared on her head and she also had the impress of the five sacred wounds. By order of the bishop, she submitted to medical treatment but obtained no relief.

While having these supernatural experiences, Veronica remained a practical woman of affairs. She was novice mistress for thirty-four years, and in 1716 she was elected abbess. While holding that position she had the convent enlarged and she improved the convent water supply by having a system of pipes installed. Long before her death Veronica told her confessor that the instruments of our Lord’s passion were imprinted on her heart. A post mortem, performed in the presence of the bishop, mayor, and many other witnesses, showed that this was true.
