The Life of Sts. Peter & Paul

From the year 258 the memory of St. Peter and St. Paul was celebrated on June 29, because it was on this date that the remains of the Apostles were transferred to their resting later. Later their remains were restored to their former resting place: St. Peter’s to the Vatican Basilica and St. Paul’s to the church on the Via Ostiensis. In the place of the catacombs a church was also built as early as the 4th century in honor of these two Apostles. The church was consecrated June 29, to the martyrdom of the Apostles Peter and Paul. On account of the distance between the two churches the feast was later divided St. Peter being more especially honored on June 29, and St. Paul on June 30.
