St. Marina Biography Patron Saint of Kidney Sufferers

Saint Marina, also known as Saint Margaret of Antioch, was a Christian saint and martyr. According to tradition, she was born in the city of Antioch in modern-day Turkey in the 3rd century. Her parents were pagan, but Marina converted to Christianity and was baptized as a young woman.

Marina is known for her strong faith and devotion to God. She is said to have refused to marry a Roman prefect, choosing instead to remain chaste and devoted to God. As a result, she was imprisoned and subjected to various tortures. Despite the suffering she endured, Marina remained steadfast in her faith and refused to renounce it.

According to legend, Marina was ultimately martyred when she was thrown into a furnace, but an angel protected her from the flames. St. Marina is revered as a patron saint of pregnant women and childbirth, as well as for her courage and faith in the face of persecution. St. Marina is also considered a patron saint of kidney sufferers and her feast day is July 20th.

Detailed Biography Saint Marina: A Brave and Faithful Martyr

 
St. Marina, also known as St. Margaret of Antioch, is one of the most revered saints in the Christian tradition. She was a young woman who lived in the 3rd century in Asia Minor, and who suffered a cruel martyrdom for her faith in Christ. Her life is an inspiring example of courage, purity, and devotion to God.
 

Early Life and Conversion

 
St. Marina was born in the city of Antioch of Pisidia, in southern Asia Minor, into a wealthy and noble family. Her father was a pagan priest, who served the idols of the Roman Empire. Her mother died when she was very young, and her father entrusted her to a nursemaid, who secretly raised her in the Christian faith.
 
St. Marina learned to love God and His commandments, and to pray and fast regularly. She also learned to read the Holy Scriptures, and to admire the lives of the holy martyrs, who gave their lives for Christ. She desired to follow their example, and to dedicate herself entirely to God.
 
When she was about 15 years old, she decided to renounce the world and its pleasures, and to live as a virgin for Christ. She refused to marry any of the suitors that her father arranged for her, and she openly confessed her faith in Christ. Her father was furious, and tried to persuade her to abandon her Christian beliefs and to worship the pagan gods. He threatened her with violence and disinheritance, but she remained firm in her faith.
 

Saint Marina’s Arrest and Torture

When her father saw that he could not change her mind, he disowned her and reported her to the local governor, Olymbrios, who was a fierce persecutor of Christians. Olymbrios summoned St. Marina to his court, and asked her about her name, family, and religion. She answered boldly that she was a Christian, and that she had no other Lord but Jesus Christ.
 
Olymbrios was impressed by her beauty and nobility, and tried to seduce her with promises of wealth and honor. He offered to make her his wife, if she would renounce Christ and worship the Roman gods. St. Marina rejected his offer with contempt, and said that she would rather die than betray her heavenly Bridegroom.
 
Olymbrios then ordered her to be tortured mercilessly. She was stripped of her clothes, beaten with rods, whipped with leather straps, burned with torches, stretched on a rack, pierced with nails, and thrown into a boiling cauldron. But by the grace of God, she endured all these torments without fear or complaint. She prayed constantly to God, who healed her wounds miraculously.
 

The Defeat of the Dragon

One night, while she was in prison, St. Marina had a vision of a fearsome dragon, who came to devour her. She realized that this was a manifestation of the devil, who wanted to frighten her and make her lose her faith. She made the sign of the cross over herself, and said: “In the name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, I command you to leave me alone!”
 
The dragon roared with rage, and attacked her with his teeth and claws. But St. Marina grabbed him by the neck, and threw him on the ground. She stepped on his head with her foot, and said: “How dare you attack me, you miserable beast? You are defeated by the power of Christ, who died on the cross for me!”
 
The dragon vanished in smoke, and St. Marina heard a voice from heaven saying: “Rejoice, Marina! You have overcome your enemy by your faith and courage. Be strong until the end, and you will receive the crown of life!”
 

The Final Martyrdom

The next day, Olymbrios brought St. Marina before him again, and asked her if she was ready to renounce Christ and worship the gods. He was astonished to see that she was healed from all her wounds, and that she looked more radiant than ever. He thought that this was a sign that the gods favored her.
 
St. Marina told him that it was not the gods who healed her, but Jesus Christ, who is the true God and Savior of the world. She challenged him to abandon his idols and believe in Christ as well.
 
Olymbrios was enraged by her words, and ordered her to be beheaded without delay. St. Marina rejoiced that she was going to join her Lord in heaven. She prayed for herself and for all those who would remember her name and ask for her intercession.
 
She then bowed her head to receive the sword of martyrdom. She gave up her spirit to God, and received the crown of glory. This happened on July 17, in the year 304.

St. Marina is honored as one of the most illustrious martyrs of the early Church. Her relics are preserved in various places, such as Athens, Mount Athos, Venice, and Rome. Many miracles have been attributed to her intercession, especially for those who suffer from diseases or demonic attacks.
 
St. Marina is also known as St. Margaret of Antioch, because her story was confused with that of another martyr of the same name, who lived in Antioch of Syria. She is often depicted in icons holding a cross and a dragon, symbolizing her victory over the devil.
 
St. Marina is the patron saint of women, especially those who are pregnant or in labor. She is also invoked by those who seek purity, courage, and faithfulness to God.
 
St. Marina is celebrated on July 17 in the Eastern Orthodox Church, and on July 20 in the Roman Catholic Church.
