St. Paul the Hermit Biography

St. Paul the Hermit, also known as St. Paul of Thebes, is considered one of the earliest hermits and one of the first Christian anchorites, or hermits. He is honored as a saint by the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Church. His feast day is celebrated on January 15th.

St. Paul the Hermit is believed to have been born in the 3rd century AD in Upper Egypt, and it is said that he was a Christian from an early age. According to tradition, he was deeply affected by the persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Decius and he fled into the desert, to seek solitude and escape the persecution.

Paul lived in the desert for over 60 years, surviving on nothing but a handful of dates and some water each day. He lived in a cave, where he prayed and meditated, and it’s said that he spent his days and nights in constant communion with God.

It’s believed that Paul had many visions and revelations during his time in the desert, which helped him to understand the love of God and the importance of humility and detachment from the world. He’s also said to have received the Eucharist from an angel and to have seen the souls of the righteous in heaven.

According to tradition, St. Anthony the Great, considered the father of monasticism, went to find Paul when he himself was seeking to flee the world. He found him still alive and in good health, and Paul spent the last days of his life instructing Anthony and then passed away in the company of the disciple, who buried him in his cave.

After his death, Paul’s hermitage became a place of pilgrimage and his reputation as a saintly figure spread throughout the Christian world. His life of hermitage and devotion to God served as an inspiration to many and set the model for Christian monasticism.

The Life of St. Paul the Hermit

Fruits of the Faith

The fruit of a palm tree furnished the hermit with food; its leaves, clothing; whilst a nearby spring supplied water to quench his thirst. Having tasted the great consolations in prayer and penance, St. Paul spent the remaining days of his life (ninety years) in the desert in communion with God.

Towards the end of his life the great St. Anthony, who also had served God for many years in the wilderness, visited St. Paul. While they were discoursing together, a raven dropped a loaf of bread before them. St. Paul said, “Our good God has sent us a dinner. In this manner have I received half a loaf every day these sixty years past; now you are come to see me, Christ has doubled His provision for His servants”. Having partaken of the food and refreshed themselves at the spring, they spent the night in prayer.

Early next morning St. Paul told Saint Anthony that his death would occur soon and that he had been sent to bury him, adding: “Go and fetch the cloak given you by St. Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, in which I desire you to wrap my body”. St. Anthony was surprised, and hastened to bring the cloak. As he was returning he saw Paul’s soul ascend to Heaven. He found his body kneeling upright with arms outstretched. Having paid his last respects to the holy corpse, he carried it out of the cave and buried it. On St. Anthony‘s return home, he praised God and related to his Monks what he had seen and done.

St. Paul died in 342 at the age of one hundred and thirteen, and is usually called the first hermit, to distinguish him from others of the same name.
