Biography of St. Regis

St. Regis, also known as Saint John Francis Regis, was a French Jesuit priest, born on January 31, 1597 in Fontcouverte, Languedoc, France. He was the son of wealthy and prominent parents, but he chose to dedicate his life to serving God and the poor.

St. Regis studied at the Jesuit College of Clermont, where he became known for his intelligence and piety. After completing his education, he joined the Society of Jesus and was ordained a priest in 1624.

As a priest, St. Regis dedicated himself to the spiritual needs of the people of the rural areas in which he worked. He made a special effort to help the poor and abandoned, working tirelessly to improve their lives. He established schools and hospitals, and he worked to combat the superstitions that were prevalent in the region. He also had a special concern for the poor girls and women, he helped them finding work and taught them to read and write.

St. Regis was also known for his strong devotion to the sacraments, especially the sacrament of confession. He spent many hours hearing confessions, and he is said to have had the gift of being able to bring sinners to repentance. He was deeply committed to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, which he promoted as a powerful tool for spiritual growth.

St. Regis was also a great preacher, he was known for his eloquence, passion, and ability to reach the hearts of the people. He preached throughout the region, spreading the Good News of the Gospel and urging people to live a holy and virtuous life.

St. Regis passed away on December 31, 1640, at the age of 43. His holiness was widely recognized and he was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1929. He is considered a patron saint of the young and of Confessors.

He is remembered for his dedication to the poor, for his ability to bring sinners to repentance, and for his powerful preaching. His feast day is celebrated on December 31st.

St. Regis is remembered as a model of compassion, service and humility, who lived a life of heroic virtue, his example continues to inspire many people around the world to follow Jesus and serve the poor. His body is preserved in the church of Saint-Pierre-de-Fursac, which was built in honor of him.

St. Isaac Jogues, a Jesuit priest and missionary, who is also known as St. Regis, is venerated as a martyr by the Catholic Church, and his feast day is celebrated on October 19th. He was born in France in 1607 and was martyred in 1646 by the Mohawk tribe in what is now New York.

As a missionary, St. Isaac Jogues devoted his life to the conversion and education of the American Indians, he was captured and tortured by the Mohawks but he continued to teach and convert them. He is considered to be the first martyr of the American continent.

For this reason, he is considered the patron saint of American Indians, the Diocese of Ogdensburg, New York, and the Congregation of the Holy Cross, Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana. He is also considered the patron saint of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales.
