St. Clement of Alexandria assures us that St. Matthias was one of the seventy-two disciples of Jesus. This is also confirmed by Eusebius and St. Jerome.

In 436 a daughter was born to an Irish lord, named Duptace, at Fochard in Ulster, and called Bridget in baptism. From her infancy Bridget showed signs of the sanctity to which God’s grace was leading her.

St. Catherine was the fourth child of Prince Ulf Gudmarsson and St. Bridget. From early youth Catherine loved God intensely; at the age of seven she was placed in the care of the holy Abbess of the convent of Riseberg to be educated.
