St. Dorothy – Patron Saint of Gardeners and Florists

St. Dorothy is a Christian martyr and saint who lived in the 3rd Century. According to tradition, she was a young woman who devoted her life to God and was martyred for her faith. She is known for her patronage of gardeners and florists and her story has been celebrated in art, literature, and liturgy.

Dorothy was born in in Caesarea Mazaca (modern-day Kayseri, Turkey), during a time of great persecution of Christians under the Roman Empire. She was raised in a Christian family and from a young age, she had a deep devotion to God. She was also known to be particularly fond of flowers, hence her patronage over Gardeners and Florists.

When she was brought before the Roman governor as a Christian martyr, she was asked to renounce her faith, but she refused. Instead, she proclaimed her love for Christ and her belief in him. The governor, who was impressed by her steadfastness, ordered her to be put to death by beheading.

It is said that before she died, she sent a message to her friend, Theophilus, who had mocked her belief in God, in the form of a basket of flowers. This miracle is considered as an early reference to the giving of flowers as a symbol of faith and devotion.

St. Dorothy’s martyrdom is said to have occurred during the persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, around the year 303 AD. The exact details of her life and death are uncertain, and her story is considered to be a legend rather than historical fact.

St. Dorothy’s feast day is celebrated on February 6th, by the Roman Catholic Church, The Eastern Orthodox Church and some branches of Anglicanism. She is considered as one of the early Christian martyrs, and her story has been celebrated in art, literature, and liturgy throughout the centuries.

The Life of St. Dorothy

St. Dorothy, a young and beautiful girl in the city of Caesarea, in Asia Minor. She suffered torment and torture because she refused to marry a pagan or to sacrifice to the pagan idols. To try and weaken St. Dorothy’s faith, the authorities sent her two sisters to persuade Dorothy to renounce her Christian faith. The authorities  sent her two sisters, who, obliging out of fear, were tasked to weaken Dorothy in Christianity. The result was just the opposite; St. Dorothy converted them; both of whom later suffered martyrdom as a result of their new Christian faith. Due to St. Dorothy’s unwavering faith, she was tortured and beheaded. Her body is venerated in the church which bears her name, beyond the Tiber, in Rome.
