The Life of St. John Vianney, Patron of Parish Priests
St. John Vianney, also known as the Holy Curé of Ars, was a French Catholic priest who lived in the 19th century. He is venerated as a saint and as the patron of parish priests, because of his exemplary pastoral work and his extraordinary holiness. He is also famous for his gift of reading souls and his power over the devil, who often tormented him.
Early Life and Vocation
St. John Vianney was born on May 8, 1786, in Dardilly, near Lyon, France. He was the fourth of six children of Matthieu and Marie Vianney, devout Catholic farmers who helped the poor and sheltered fugitive priests during the French Revolution.
St. John Vianney received his first communion at the age of 13, in a neighbor’s kitchen, during a clandestine Mass celebrated by a priest who risked his life to minister to the faithful. He was deeply impressed by the courage and piety of these priests, and felt a call to follow their example.
However, his father was reluctant to let him leave the farm, and his education was interrupted by the Revolution. He also struggled with Latin, which was essential for studying theology. He was drafted into the army in 1809, but he managed to escape and return to his village with the help of a young deserter.
He resumed his studies under the guidance of Fr. Balley, the parish priest of Écully, who became his mentor and friend. He was finally ordained a priest in 1815, after overcoming many difficulties and doubts.
Ministry in Ars
In 1818, St. John Vianney was appointed as the parish priest of Ars, a small and remote village in the diocese of Belley. The people there were indifferent or hostile to religion, and the church was neglected and dilapidated. St. John Vianney set out to revive the faith and morals of his flock, by preaching, catechizing, visiting the sick, and setting an example of charity and austerity.
He also devoted himself to the sacrament of confession, which he considered the most effective means of conversion and sanctification. He spent up to 16 hours a day in the confessional, hearing the sins and sorrows of thousands of penitents who came from all over France and beyond. He had a remarkable insight into their souls, and gave them wise and compassionate advice. He also performed many miracles of healing and prophecy, attributed to his intercession and his relics.
St. John Vianney’s ministry was not without opposition and suffering. He faced criticism and calumny from some of his fellow priests, who were jealous or suspicious of his popularity and holiness. He also endured physical and spiritual attacks from the devil, who tried to frighten him with noises, apparitions, and temptations. He once said: “The devil has only one door by which to enter into our soul: our will; there are no secret doors.”
He also had a strong desire to leave Ars and join a monastery, where he could pray and do penance in solitude. He attempted to do so several times, but he always returned to his parish, obedient to his bishop and to God’s will.
Death and Legacy
St. John Vianney died on August 4, 1859, at the age of 73, after a long illness. He was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1925, who also proclaimed him as the patron saint of parish priests in 1929. His body is incorrupt and is displayed in a glass reliquary above the main altar of the basilica of Ars. His heart is kept in a separate chapel as a symbol of his burning love for God and souls.
St. John Vianney is widely regarded as one of the greatest saints of modern times, and a model for priests and laypeople alike. He is celebrated for his humility, simplicity, zeal, purity, prayerfulness, and charity. He once said: “The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus.”
He is also known for his devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom he called “Our Lady of the Daffodil”, because he saw her in a vision holding a bouquet of these flowers. He encouraged his parishioners to pray the rosary daily and to consecrate themselves to Mary.
He is honored with several titles, such as “The Curé of Ars”, “The Saint of the Confessional”, “The Wonder-Worker of the 19th Century”, and “The Patron of All Priests”.
His feast day is August 4 in the Roman Catholic calendar, and August 8 in the pre-1969 calendar. He is also commemorated on August 9 by the Church of England.
